The nice part was that we split the meat and expense evenly. That was the worst hike of my life and I was in awesome physical shape then. The next year, we only had 3 of us and we had to pack out a nice bull from about 3 miles. The first year we had 5 people and packed out 2 elk (two days a part). We usually split up in groups of 2 or 3 to hunt and all got together to pack out. After the first was down, everyone could wait on a trophy. The other rule they had was about the first person to come across a "shooter" (legal for their tag), was suppose to pull the trigger so we all went home with meat. They had a great public area that they hunted each year and it was productive. Your first year, you were an apprentice and was there to put your time in and help pack out. We would go in groups of 3 to 5 to help each other pack out. 13 years ago, I was part of an annual Elk hunt camp from NE Kansas.
